Melanotaenia australis “Kambolgie Creek“

Was wir im Aquarium unter diesem Namen pflegen, stammt überhaupt nicht aus dem Kambolgie Creek. Es ist ein Aquarienstamm unbekannten Ursprungs und hat überhaupt nichts mit dem „richtigen“ Kambolgie Creek-Fisch zu tun. Der Kambolgie Creek ist Teil des South Alligator River im Northern Territory Australiens und liegt im Kakadu Nationalpark. Dort gibt es einen Zufluss namens „Ferny Creek“. Dies ist der einzige bekannte Fundort des „richtigen“ Fisches. Es handelt sich um groß werdende, äußerst imposante Tiere mit blutroter Schwanzflosse (deshalb zeitweilig nach Melanotaenia solata eingeordnet) mit ausgeprägt rhombenförmiger Körperform.

Fishes kept under this name in the Aquarium hobby are not from Kambolgie Creek. These falsely named fish are an aquarium strain of unknown origin and have nothing to do with the true variety. Kambolgie Creek is part of the South Alligator River in the Northern Territory and is part of Kakadu National Park. It has a tributary called Ferny Creek. This is the only known location of the “real” fish. They grow big and become huge, impressive animals with blood-red tail fins and a rhomboid body shape.
