Melanotaenia mairasi

Bereits 2011 beschrieben, ist dieser Regenbogenfisch bislang noch nicht in der Aquaristik aufgetaucht. In der Originalbeschreibung ist nur ein Weibchen abgebildet, weil G. Allen und M. Ammer, die damals mit einem Ultraleichtflugzeug den Fundort entdeckten, nur ein Weibchen und ein paar Jungtiere fangen konnten und vor Ort konservierten. Fotos von Männchen waren unbekannt, bis kurze Zeit später eine indonesisch/französische Expedition ebenfalls den Fundort aufsuchte und auch Männchen fing. Diese Bilder (von konservierten Tieren) sahen jedenfalls so interessant aus, dass wir auf dem Rückweg von Lengguru im Dorf Murano an der Küste Station machten und uns von dort aus auf dem Weg zum Fundort machten. Das Biotop ist ein Sumpfgebiet, das von einer unterirdischen Quelle gespeist wird. Es liegt isoliert in einem Tal. Der Weg dorthin brachte uns an den Rand der völligen Erschöpfung, aber wir haben es geschafft und konnten M. mairasi lebend sammeln und bis ins heimische Aquarium bringen. Dieser mittelgroße Regenbogenfisch besticht durch seine blaugrüne Reflexzone mit orangefarbenen Längsstreifen im oberen Rücken und durch die Flossen! Wer hat schon dreifarbige Flossen in schwarz-gelbweiß-rot? Die größten Tiere, die wir im Biotop beobachten konnten, waren ca. 6 cm lang.

Already described in 2011 this rainbowfish did not appear in the hobby so far. The description shows only a picture of a female because G. Allen and M. Ammer when visiting the collection place with an ultralight aircraft took could not catch anything else than this female and some youngsters and preserved them at place. No pictures of males were available until an Indonesian/’French expedition visited the place and caught also males. The pictures ot the (also preserved) male specimen looked so interesting, that we traveled 2019 on the way back from Lengguru to the coast village of Murano and from there an walking trail to this place. The habitat is a swamp fed by a subterranean spring. The place is isolated in a valley. The walking trail brought us to the edge of total exhaust but we made it and brought this fish in the hobby. This rainbowfish is mid-sized and shows a blue-reen reflective zone in the upper body with orange colored lateral lines. And the fins! Which other rainbowfish has three-colored fins in black-yellowwhite-red? The largest fishes we could see in the habitat were about 6 cm long.
